Energy 101 Returns During Winter '22 Term

Energy 101, the Irving Institute's free, not-for-credit course, is back this winter, offering a fun and engaging way for Dartmouth community members to learn about the basics of energy. Geared toward learners with little-to-no background in energy, the course covers a range of topics that help participants understand a little more about our energy system.

While initial plans to host weekly discussion sessions in person were foiled by the recent surge in COVID cases, we have been enjoying lively Zoom discussions each week about the electricity grid, energy justice, our evolving fuel mixes, energy and the built environment, transportation, climate innovation, finance, and the socio-technical aspects of the energy system.

To prepare for the discussion sessions, participants watch three short videos each week on different topics, and then bring their questions to the live session. Students have learned about energy finance from Revers Center for Energy, Sustainability, and Innovation Director April Salas; energy and the built environment from Thayer School of Engineering Dean Alexis Abramson; climate innovation from climate executive and Irving Institute Advisory Board member David Yeh '94; and a range of other foundational topics from Irving Institute Director Elizabeth Wilson, Academic Director Amanda Graham, and Senior Advisor Stephen Doig.

The series wraps up on February 2, but all are welcome to check out the videos and discussion sessions from the series on our YouTube channel
