Arctic Research and Policy

As part of the Irving Institute's efforts to extend networks, work toward solutions to energy challenges that start with societal needs, and build on Dartmouth's existing research strengths, Research Director Stephen Doig has been representing the Institute as part of a number of Arctic-related projects.

Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee (IARPC)

The Irving Institute, in conjunction with the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) convened a three-day workshop over summer 2020 to

1) gather insights to help inform the development of the next five year strategy for IARPC; and

2) develop areas for collaboration and research in Arctic regions.

There were ~25 participants roughly split across the two organizations and included a range of disciplines and expertise from technical to the arts and humanities. A report of recommendations was provided to IARPC and has been followed up with participation in working groups.

Engineering Research Center (ERC)

The Irving Institute is working with Thayer faculty and external collaborators to establish an Engineering Research Center at Dartmouth focused on developing sustainable infrastructure for Arctic communities. The group is in the pre-proposal phase for what will be a next generation ERC which mirrors the recognized need for socially beneficial outcomes that are developed in conjunction with the local community and use convergent R&D methodologies. If the pre-proosal moves forward, the groups will submit a full proposal by mid-year 2021.
