Dartmouth undergraduate Shannon Sartain '21 and Research Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies David Lutz, along with PhD student Evan Dethier, Guarini '15, Guarini '20, published a study of the impact of gold mining on water quality in the Amazon basin in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Sartain received an Irving Institute mini-grant that helped her travel to Dublin, Ireland to attend the 2018 Google Earth Engine Users Summit where she gained skills that aided her contribution to the paper. Professor Lutz is currently leading a research project analyzing the social and environmental impacts of woody biomass power in New Hampshire that received Irving Institute seed grant funding.
