Honoring the Legacy of Arthur L. Irving

Today, May 13, 2025, we commemorate the one-year anniversary of the passing of Arthur L. Irving. Mr. Irving was a giant in the energy field and a committed philanthropist, who, along with his wife Sandra and daughter Sarah, was a devoted and generous friend to Dartmouth.

Alongside his wife Sandra and daughter Sarah '10, TU '14, Mr. Irving was a true friend to Dartmouth. Their generous gift led to the establishment of the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society. His unwavering commitment to students was central to his vision, and he found immense joy in hearing them share their experiences related to the Institute. He took great pride in the Institute's work addressing the complex challenges and opportunities within the energy sector, always emphasizing the importance of societal impact when developing solutions.

"Community, kindness, and entrepreneurship were core values of Mr. Irving. We honor his legacy by embodying these values and nurturing the next generation of energy leaders who prioritize human-centered approaches to solving energy challenges," said Geoff Parker, Faculty Director of the Irving Institute.

"We are deeply grateful for Mr. Irving's enduring legacy and continue to be inspired by his vision and values," added Derek Walker, Executive Director of the Irving Institute.

Dartmouth recognized Mr. Irving's achievements and dedication to education and community with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (2010), and both he and Sandra were adopted as members of Dartmouth's Class of 1972.
