Exploring the Future of U.S. Energy: A Bipartisan Dialogue

On April 7, 2025, the Irving Institute co-sponsored a vital dialogue focused on the pressing needs of the nation's energy infrastructure. This event brought together Dan Brouillette, former Secretary of Energy under President Donald Trump, and Kevin Knobloch, who served as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Department of Energy during President Barack Obama's administration.

The discussion illustrated Dartmouth's commitment to fostering respectful discourse across political divides, as both leaders explored the challenges and future necessities of U.S. energy systems. Notably, despite their differing viewpoints, Brouillette and Knobloch identified several critical areas of agreement.

"I appreciate the shared recognition that AI has profound implications for the future of our energy systems. It not only represents a growing source of electricity demand but also offers promising solutions to complex resource integration challenges and innovative efficiency improvement strategies," said Geoff Parker, Faculty Director of the Irving Institute.

"When we delve into the complexities of pressing issues, it's remarkable how many points of agreement emerge. Despite the clear distinctions between Brouillette's focus on the energy emergency and Knobloch's call to address the climate crisis, both leaders recognized shared priorities. They aligned on the potential of geothermal energy and advanced nuclear, the urgent need for transmission reform, and the imperative for increased electricity to meet rising demand," noted Derek Walker, Executive Director of the Irving Institute.
