Enhancing Scientific Writing Skills: Another Successful Workshop at the Irving Institute

On November 12th, the Irving Institute hosted an engaging workshop dedicated to writing scientific research papers, drawing over 70 attendees eager to enhance their writing abilities. The session was led by two seasoned experts: Angie Hofmann, Director of Research Programs at the Irving Institute, and Shawn Martin, Head of Scholarly Communication, Copyright, and Publishing at Dartmouth Libraries. Together, they equipped participants with essential writing principles and best practices for crafting impactful research articles.

Angie Hofmann brings a wealth of knowledge to the table, being the author of two acclaimed textbooks in scientific writing—Scientific Writing and Communication: Papers, Proposals, and Presentations and Writing in the Biological Sciences, both published by Oxford University Press. Her expertise has made a significant mark in the field, providing invaluable guidance to researchers navigating the complexities of scientific communication.

Shawn Martin complements Hofmann's insights with his extensive background in scholarly communication. With over a decade of experience at prestigious institutions such as Indiana University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Michigan, Shawn manages Dartmouth's library initiatives focusing on open access and research services, equipping attendees with a broad understanding of the publishing landscape.

The workshop prepared participants to effectively apply winning writing strategies, fostering skills that are crucial for their research endeavors. This initiative demonstrates the Irving Institute's commitment to supporting the academic community in producing high-quality scientific work.

Looking ahead, there's more to come. On April 18, 2025, Angelika Hofmann will host a grant-writing workshop tailored for postdoctoral researchers, research scientists, and faculty, further bolstering the resources available to help researchers succeed.

This recent workshop not only honed essential writing skills but also affirmed the Irving Institute's role as a vital resource for researchers looking to excel in their publications.
