Dr. Sarah Kelly, Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Geography, has joined the Irving Institute as Research Associate. Her primary work in this role will center around her position as Director of Practice and Community Engagement for the Dartmouth Energy Justice Clinic

"As a Research Associate at the Irving Institute of Energy and Society," said Dr. Kelly, "I hope to expand the potential of energy systems to be more inclusive and equitable for local populations and frontline communities. Working with Dr. Maron Greenleaf, who is an Assistant Professor in Anthropology, we co-direct the Energy Justice Clinic, which facilitates engaged scholarship with Dartmouth students, faculty, and community partners. We've been able to launch this experiential learning program with the support of the Irving Institute for Energy and Society, among other groups at Dartmouth like the Center for Social Impact, the Design Initiative at Dartmouth, and the Ethics Institute."

Dr. Kelly went on to say, "Part of what I love about being at Dartmouth and working with the energy institute is being able to teach and research energy systems with multidisciplinary insights. At the clinic we work with students from engineering to humanities to the social sciences and it's a really beautiful example of liberal arts education in practice. All the resources and connections at the Institute improve the training and energy literacy that students develop going through the Energy Justice Clinic. I am really excited to see us expand our reach of collaboration both inside of Dartmouth and in the broader community this year."

A geographer who specializes in interdisciplinary and applied research on energy and water, Dr. Kelly bases her work in Northern New England (ancestral homeland of the Abenaki, Pennacook, and Wabanaki Peoples) and southern Chile (ancestral Mapuche-Williche territory). She is trained as a community-based participatory researcher. Her work has been published in Energy Policy, Energy Research and Social Science, and Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, among other journals.
