Sydney Wuu '24 Named Presidential Scholar

Congratulations to Sydney Wuu '24 who was recently named a James O. Freedman Presidential Scholar for 2022-2023. Established in 1988, the program provides opportunities for juniors to work as research assistants with Dartmouth faculty. Sydney will be working with Assistant Professor of Anthropology Maron Greenleaf and Postdoctoral Researcher Sarah Kelly on an energy justice focused research project investigating how energy systems can be more equitable and increase the rights and capabilities of local people.

Sydney Wuu, an Economics and Environmental Studies major with a focus on Sustainable Energy and minoring in Public Policy hails from Pasadena, California. When asked about the honor, she said, "I am excited to work with Dr. Kelly and Dr. Greenleaf this summer and during my junior spring as a Presidential Scholar on a project called 'A Social Science Participatory Research Approach: Justice in Corporate Energy Systems.'"

As part of the project, Sydney will investigate how the private sector and local development of community power can be more equitable and increase the rights and capabilities of local people.

Previously, Sydney worked as a Research Assistant for Dartmouth's Energy Justice Clinic, where she analyzed community power in California, and she was enrolled in Profesor Kelly's spring term 2022 course "Energy Justice."

After graduation, Sydney hopes to attend law school and work in environmental or energy law to make a difference in the uneven distribution of benefits and burdens put in place due to energy systems.
