Dr. Stephen Doig, research director at the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society, recently announced a successful bid for a second round of funding from the Department of Defense for an ongoing Arctic energy research collaboration. The initial funding of $1.5 million, awarded in fall 2019, enabled researchers at the Institute, Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering, and the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory to begin work on improving energy services, delivery, storage, and mobility for military bases in the Arctic.
This second round of funding, totaling $1.5 million, will enable the research teams to launch a second stage of work in the three areas: energy optimization across systems and sub-systems in cold regions; batteries in cold regions; and heat recovery in Arctic stations and habitats.
"Projects like the Dartmouth/CRREL collaboration represent one of the Institute's main goals in the energy and society research effort, by helping expand existing research strengths at Dartmouth and enable investigators who are already solid in the energy field to do even more and higher-impact work," notes Dr. Doig.
