Participate in the Spring Energy Immersion Trip in Appalachia!

Spring Break 2020: Natural Resource Extraction, Health, and Local Economies in West Virginia and Kentucky Energy Immersion Trip
Tentative Dates: Sunday, March 15 - Saturday, March 28, 2020

Our spring immersion trip is a hands-on learning opportunity to understand the processes of energy and extraction in Appalachia as well as the sociopolitical, environmental, economic impacts of fossil fuel extraction and the possibilities of integrating renewable energy. The trip will also explore locally based efforts for community and economic empowerment and revitalization.

We are seeking applicants from diverse backgrounds and with a range of extracurricular and academic interests. Previous involvement with sustainability, energy systems, earth sciences, health, or environmental justice work is not required. Ideal applicants will:

Be willing, ready, and excited to learn about the energy industry from multiple perspectives and through various social, economic, and political lenses

Be flexible, willing to go with the flow, able to put the group's needs before their own wants, but also able to communicate when their needs aren't being met

Be emotionally present and open-minded to hearing different points of view and having dialogue across difference

Be able to commit time to both attending the trip over spring break, but also to prepare for the experience by attending weekly education sessions during winter term, starting week of January 20, 2020.

Cost
An estimated $627 covers all travel expenses, programming, housing, and food for the entire duration of the trip. Need-based financial aid is available up to 100% through an application and approval process after acceptance on the trip. Cost will not be a barrier to participation in this program, so please apply and we will work with you to make the trip possible, if accepted.

Applications are DUE FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 2020 BY 10 P.M. Interviews with applicants will be held as needed on January 13 and 14. Accepted participants will be notified by the end of the day Wednesday, January 15, 2020.
