Fall 2019 Campus Outreach and Education Energy and Society Events

The Irving Institute hit the ground running as fall term kicked off in mid-September. We hosted an information table at the Orientation Info Expo, where three members of the Dartmouth Energy Alliance student group as well as Institute staff connected with members of the Class of '23 to share information about opportunities to get involved with us. Nearly 90 '23s signed up to join our Dartmouth Energy Collaborative mailing list, signaling a vibrant interest among new students about energy and society issues.

Energy 101, our free, five-week educational series kicked off on Sept. 17 with a healthy weekly attendance of between 20-30 students and local community members. Sessions have covered topics like basic terminology and concepts in energy, transitions in energy and transportation, energy at Dartmouth, and more. The series creates an opportunity for participants to build a basic understanding of how energy impacts our lives and meet others interested in energy issues.

Our bi-weekly Dartmouth Energy Collaborative (DEC) lunch series also started in September, with representatives from the Irving Institute, the Dartmouth Sustainability Office, Thayer, and Tuck offering an overview of the year ahead in Energy and Society at Dartmouth. Recent lunches have included a recap of the Dartmouth/Town of Hanover trip to tour Danish renewable energy sites, a view of the energy landscape at Dartmouth from Dartmouth Sustainability Corps students, and an update about the Town of Hanover's sustainability efforts.
