Faculty & Research Affiliates Program: Benefits & Expectations

The Irving Institute for Energy and Society's Faculty & Research Affiliates Program seeks to engage, enhance, and leverage Dartmouth's world-class competencies, including its thought leadership, focus in both research and teaching, and interdisciplinary excellence across the liberal arts, business, engineering, and medicine, in the pursuit of accelerating an affordable, reliable, and equitable clean energy transition. Dartmouth Faculty Affiliates are either actively pursuing, or interested in pursuing research that supports our mission and/or aligns with one or more of our research pillars, and agree to the following benefits and expectations:

PERIOD OF ACTIVITY: Two-year term with automatic renewal

    1. Competitive Seed Grants for projects aligned to our mission and/or research pillars
    2. Prioritized notification for special funding opportunities
    3. Potential post-doctoral researcher access
    4. Enhanced grant-identification and grant writing support
    5. Specialized training in scientific writing and communication 
    6. Opportunities to apply for support of student research, faculty, and trainee mentorships 
  2. Networking & Collaboration 
    1. Networking opportunities across the Dartmouth via social and academic events
    2. Introductions to international partners, such as the Indian Institute of Science & the Technical University Bergakademie of Freiberg (TUBAF)
    3. Potential support for travel to international partner institutions and conference 
    4. Access to on-site experts, senior fellows, practitioners, and peers affiliated with the Institute
  3. Amplification
    1. Forums to present research, including our faculty seminars series, research symposia, venues like CERAWeek, and more
    2. The Irving Institute's communications channels may be leveraged to elevate your visibility
    3. Our Sparks & Currents thought leadership section may be used to amplify your thoughts, produce podcasts, or elevate the work of your team
    4. Visibility on the Irving Institute's Faculty & Research Affiliates webpage
    5. The Institute is happy to promote your hiring needs via digital channels
  4. Prioritized access to Irving Institute facilities, as available
    1. Private conference rooms and open meeting spaces for meetings
    2. Space for hosting department meetings and functions

Expectations

  1. Pursue, perform, publish, and promote your research 
    1. Find ways to connect your research to the Irving Institute mission and/or research pillars
    2. Present your research (finalized or in progress) in at a faculty seminar, research symposium, or programmed engagement
  2. Engage in the Irving Institute Affiliate Community
    1. Attend at least one faculty seminar per term 
    2. Serve on hiring or review committees, as needed and as available
    3. Share Irving Institute events and opportunities with your networks
  3. Enhance awareness of the Irving Institute's mission and programs at Dartmouth and beyond
    1. Act as an ambassador for Dartmouth's Irving Institute
    2. Identify opportunities for collaboration for research, scholar exchanges, and educational endeavors that align with our mission
  4. Provide information for Irving Institute communications
    1. Provide your photo, short bio, and research as is relates to our mission for our website
    2. Provide overviews of your published research and other related endeavors such as speaking engagements or op-ed's for amplification
    3. Alert us to energy and society courses in your department or school, as well as planned courses as appropriate, to assist the Institute in maintaining an up-to-date inventory of Dartmouth-wide faculty and courses on energy and society related topics

 
ELIGIBILITY, SELECTION, AND TERMS: 
All Dartmouth College faculty and researchers that have research interests aligned with our mission are eligible to be Irving Institute Faculty & Researh Affiliates. Selection of Irving Institute Faculty Affiliates is based on the candidate's potential for, and commitment to, the interests of the program. Faculty Affiliates commit to a minimum two-year term, with automatic renewals. The Irving Institute reserves the right to terminate an individual's term as a Faculty Affiliate at any time if it determines that the continuation of the individual's term is not in the best interests of the program.
