The Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society extends its deepest gratitude to our departing Advisory Board members—Norman Bay '82, Tom Kiernan '81, Dan Reicher '78, David Yeh '94, and Ian Whitcomb, for their exceptional leadership and service. "Norman, Tom, Dan, David, and Ian have been pivotal in transforming the Irving Institute from its nascent stage to its current status as a world-class center for critical research and the education of the next generation of energy and climate leaders," noted Advisory Board Chair Scott Fisher '93, TH'93, TU'98. "The Irving Institute has benefited immensely from their engagement and their vast energy experience across the private, government, and academic sectors."
- Norman Bay '82: Norman has contributed to the Irving Institute in a multitude of ways, but his work in shaping educational initiatives that distinguish the Irving Institute's programs for students and the public is especially notable. His efforts have been critical to the development of the Irving Institute's distinctive undergraduate programs and its new Master of Energy Transition program. Furthermore, as a Partner at Willkie Farr & Gallagher, LLP, and former Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Norman's participation as a speaker at Irving Institute events and a frequent host of Dartmouth students in Washington, DC, has provided valuable insights to current and future leaders in the energy and society space, especially on complex energy policy and market issues.
- Tom Kiernan '81: Tom played a major role in developing the Irving Institute's mission statement in the Institute's early days, and since then he has been influential in the Institute's ongoing strategic direction. He has fostered the Irving Institute's "big tent" approach, supporting programs that bring together diverse parties across the energy and society spectrum to find solutions. Tom has also served as a speaker at Institute events, providing insight on navigating policy and politics associated with the energy transition. Furthermore, he has repeatedly engaged with Dartmouth students, providing valuable insights given his experiences as the President and CEO of American Rivers, and as the former CEO of the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and President of the National Parks Conservation Association.
- Dan Reicher '781: Dan contributed from the very beginning of the Irving Institute, serving as the speaker in the first lecture held by the Irving Institute in 2016. Since that time, Dan has contributed significantly to the Institute's strategy in integrating the technological, policy, and financial considerations that are critical to addressing the world's energy and society issues. He has also played a major role in organizing some of the Institute's most prominent public events, and he spearheads the Institute's Uncommon Dialogue on Northeast Rivers and Dams initiative. Dan is co-founder and Partner at Climate Adaptive Infrastructure, LLC, and he previously served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy, Google's Director of Climate and Energy Initiatives, and Founding Director of Stanford's Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance.
- Ian Whitcomb: While serving as the President and Board Member of Irving Oil, Ian was instrumental in establishing the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society in collaboration with the Arthur Irving Family and Dartmouth. Starting with his service on the Irving Institute's Interim Advisory Board at the Institute's beginnings, and extending throughout his time on the Advisory Board, Ian has provided strategic advice that prioritizes and supports both the advancement of Institute-supported research and the growth of student engagement and education. Ian's perspectives as a business leader in the international energy space, both at Irving Oil and previously as a Senior Partner at Deloitte, have also been valuable in considering emerging energy issues for the Institute to address.
- David Yeh '94: Leveraging his venture capital, global finance, and policy experience in the energy and climate space, David has made a significant difference in shaping the Irving Institute's strategic initiatives to accelerate clean-tech deployment, including the development of the Institute's Greenshot Accelerator program. In addition, David helped advance the Institute's presence in addressing geopolitical energy issues. David is Partner and Founder of Precursor, the first purpose-built project development and advisory platform dedicated to first-of-a-kind (FOAK) industrial and energy infrastructure projects. He is also a seasoned international investor and former White House official who played a leading role in President Obama's initiatives to grow impact investing.
While these distinguished individuals' tenures as Advisory Board members have come to a close, the Irving Institute looks forward to continuing working with all of them as valued members of the Irving Institute community.
