Energy 101 Wraps Up First Online Series

In 2018 the Irving Institute for Energy and Society began offering Energy 101, a free, not-for-credit course providing learners with a foundation in the history, concepts, and challenges of energy. Typically sessions were held in person in a traditional classroom setting on campus. Fall 2020 had different plans, however. While public health guidance kept us from being able to gather in person to learn about such topics as how the energy economy transitioned away from whale oil, what apples have to do with measuring energy, how energy, buildings, and transportation intersect, and what the future of Dartmouth College's energy system may hold, the Energy 101 show went on!  Over the course of six Tuesday nights during September and October, the energy-curious logged onto Zoom to get an introduction to the ways energy connects to our past, present, and future.

With more than 80 participants attending the sessions, either live or by watching archived videos, our first foray into the online version of Energy 101 garnered positive feedback about the topics, the speakers, and the quality of the discussions. While the fall 2020 series is finished, you can view all of the sessions on YouTube.
